Public meeting on Water Levels

For Immediate Release

Ottawa, September 10th, 2003 - On September 24th, 2003, the Public Interest Advisory Group (PIAG) will be hosting a public meeting on the regulation of St. Lawrence River water levels. The meeting will take place from 7 p.m. to 9 p.m. in the Sarto Desnoyers Community Centre, 1335 Chemin Bord Du Lac, Dorval (Montréal), Quebec.

The PIAG is a volunteer group appointed by the International Joint Commission to ensure effective communication between the public and the International Lake Ontario-St. Lawrence River Study. It is the goal of the PIAG to ensure that all parties affected by Lake Ontario-St. Lawrence water levels are able to express their concerns about water-levels and evaluate options for regulating Lake Ontario outflows.

The Lake Ontario-St. Lawrence Study was set in motion in 2000 by the International Joint Commission to evaluate the Commission's Order of Approval used to regulate outflows from Lake Ontario through the St. Lawrence River. The Study is assessing the impacts of changing water levels on all interests, including shoreline communities, municipal and industrial water uses, commercial navigation, hydropower, the environment, and recreational boating.
